Dr. Wangari Maathai, the renowned Kenyan environmentalist and founder of the Green Belt Movement, once said, “Even though we think that that particular action at an individual level may be very small, just imagine if it is repeated several million times. It will make a difference.” The Seeds of Hope and Action (SOHA) – Making the SDGs a Reality exhibition embodies this belief wholeheartedly.

A joint initiative of the Soka Gakkai International (SGI) and the Earth Charter International (ECI), SOHA first came to Bharat Soka Gakkai (BSG) in 2021. At a time when the pandemic brought the world to a standstill, BSG was determined to awaken individuals to the “power of one” by taking the SOHA exhibition to educational institutions across India. The primary goal of BSG in hosting these exhibitions is to impart the message of Sustainable Human Behavior (SHB), emphasizing the importance of personal transformation toward living sustainably, with respect for all life at the forefront.

This transformative vision has now reached an extraordinary milestone. On December 21, 2024, BSG conducted its 200th SOHA exhibition at Billabong High International School, Noida.

Overcoming Challenges with Determination

The road to 200 exhibitions was not without obstacles. Reaching out to diverse institutions, initiating meaningful conversations, and maintaining consistent follow-ups required persistence, patience, and a clear articulation of SOHA’s vision. Yet, the unwavering commitment of BSG staff and volunteers turned these challenges into stepping stones.

Driven by their shared mission to create change, volunteers tirelessly reached out to one institution after another. Their dedication ensured that SOHA panels traveled not only to metropolitan areas but also to remote regions, including the challenging terrains of Northeast India.

To date, SOHA has reached approximately 100,000 youth across the country.

Transforming Awareness into Action

What began as a platform for awareness has blossomed into a vibrant movement. SOHA is now a space where art, music, dialogue, and collaborative ideas converge to prioritize hope and action. Participants are encouraged to enrich the initiative with their creativity, making each exhibition a unique and inspiring experience.

The impact of SOHA goes beyond the exhibitions. Some institutions have established BSG SDG Clubs, enabling sustained action and deeper engagement with the SDGs. These clubs provide students and educators with a framework to turn inspiration into long-term efforts for positive change.

Ms. Smita Andhare, a dedicated BSG member who has conducted numerous SOHAs in Vadodara, Gujarat, shares her passion:

“The SOHA spirit to Learn, Reflect, Inspire, Empower, Act and Lead has become the passion of my life. Every day I renew my determination and pray to realize my mentor’s vision for the SDGs.”

Building a Future of Indestructible Joy

BSG remains resolute in its mission to make SOHA an unstoppable force for change. The organization is committed to relentlessly holding exhibitions across the Indian subcontinent, ensuring that every corner of the country pulsates with the vibrant energy of the “power of one”. By fostering Sustainable Human Behavior, BSG envisions a future where individuals are inspired to live mindfully with respect for all life, creating a world of harmony and hope.

Together, let us switch gears, make a difference, and co-create a future filled with indestructible joy!
